Webmail: How do I configure a SPAM filter?

How can I configure a SPAM filter?

With the R4L webmail, email is already filtered for you via our wait-listing. This technique prevents most spam from being delivered to your inbox via making sure the sending mail server is configured in a manner that a normal (non-spammer) mail server would be.

Step by step: How to configure a mail filter

  • Log into your webmail interface at http://mail2. plus your domain name
  • On the left hand menu, click the plus sing on + Mail. A sub-menu will drop down.
  • Click on Filters. The Filters page will open.
  • At the bottom of the list of filters, click on New Rule.
  • Once you have created your filter, click the save button.

Once you have created your filter, it will be active on the mail system. Even if you are using a mail program and not the webmail interface, your mail filters will be active.

Don't Use Blacklists

While the blacklist function is there, it's not a method R4L recommends for mail filtering. The From address shown on spam is usually fake, and not reused, so blacklisting the address you are receiving spam from will not prevent future spam from the same spammer.

Building Good Filters

On the webmail interface or your mail client, you will need to do a Headers - Show all Headers to see the full header of the spam you have received.

In the spam you receive, look for patterns in the message and message header. Often spam will have the same mail server or IP address in the header. You can add a rule for Received co ntains and then the name of the mail server or domain the mail server is on. You'll find this in a line in the message header that looks like:

from clever-people.com (m1.stor-massive.com [70.38.38.4]) by mx2.r4l.com (Postfix) with SMTP id 9622140C4 for <****@*******>; Thu, 11 Dec 2008 11:39:33 -0500 (EST)

Make sure you do not filter r4l.com in your rules. That will prevent any email from getting to you.
