Hosting: How can I do a traceroute to my website?

Traceroute to my Website / Email

In a case where you are not able to reach your website or email and R4L is not experiencing any downtime or problems with our services, being able to perform a traceroute is helpful in pinpointing where the problem is.

A Traceroute will show you the path that packets travel on the web between your computer, through your ISP and ultimately to our servers. In the case where the connection is not happening, it will show you the last "hop" that was valid until routing stopped.

Step by Step instructions:

On Windows (XP or Vista)

  1. From the Start menu, select “Run…”
  2. When the run box comes up, then type in cmd
  3. When you get the command prompt, enter tracert yourdomain.com
  4. Hit the “enter” key on your keyboard and wait.

On Mac

  1. Double-click the Hard Drive icon > Applications folder > Utilities folder > Network Utility program.
  2. Select the trace route tab and enter the domain name
  3. Press the “enter” key and wait.

On Linux

If you're a Linux user, you likely already know how to do this. On your command shell, type in traceroute and the name of the URL to connect to & hit enter.
