Hosting: How do I use sub-domains?

Subdomains allow you to organize your website into different sections with unique names based on your site. For example, Register4Less.com's help pages are available by typing in on your brower's address bar help.Register4Less.com. help in this example is a subdomain of Register4Less.com.

On our hosting system, you will also notice that by default http://yoursite.com will automatically updated to http://www.yoursite.com. "www" in this case is a subdomain of "yoursite.com", and is created for you automatically. If you have a subdomain configured and someone types in "www." in front of this, they will get the subdomain web page you have uploaded.

To configure subdomains for your site, you will need to create a separate directory called subdomains, and then create folders under this directory. Each folder under this directory will be the subdomain that you wish to create.

Step by Step Instructions:

In out step-by-step example, we will create two subdomains called "photos" and "home" on the domain name "example.com"

  1. First, using the DNS Zone Editor, create CNAME records for each subdomain you are creating. These will need to point to vhost.r4l.com.. You should have a record already for "www" that is pointing to this.
  2. Then, connect to your site using your FTP program.
  3. Using your FTP program, create the directory named subdomains. The folder must be spelled correctly and be lower case.
  4. Using your FTP program, under the subdomains direcotory, create the directory "photos.example.com".
  5. Using your FTP program, under the subdomains direcotory, create the directory "home.example.com".
  6. Using your FTP program, set your local directory to the directory where you have the files for photos.
  7. Using your FTP program, set the remote path to /subdomains/photos.example.com
  8. Upload the files for photos
  9. Using your FTP program, set your local directory to the directory where you have the files for home
  10. Using your FTP program, set the remote path to /subdomains/home.example.com
  11. Upload the files for home
  12. Remember, the first file that will be loaded for any subdomain should be called "index.html"
