Registration: My Registrar is blocking my transfer to R4L, what can I do?

It's rare that a domain name can be denied a transfer away from a current registrar. Unfortunately, some registrars put up roadblocks to make transfering a domain difficult.

Facts about transfer rules

  • A registrar cannot deny a transfer away of a domain that is expired.
  • A registrar cannot deny you the ability to update a domain to correct contact information, even if the domain is expired.
  • A registrar cannot deny a transfer away if the domain has simply been updated within 60 days. Only if a domain is within 60 days of being newly registered or transfered to a registrar can a transfer be denied.

What to do if your current registrar is blocking your transfer:

Get the domain released

  1. Go to http://www.internic.net/cgi/registrars/problem-report.cgi and file a complaint with ICANN. This will get forwarded 1. within a day to GoDaddy.
  2. Review the ICANN policy regarding transfers at http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm. In particular, read section 3 for the reasons a transfer can and cannot be denied by its current registrar.
  3. Call the current registrar, and tell them that they are breaking ICANN rules by denying your transfer, and demand that they unlock your domain(s), allow you to update the admin email address if needed, and provide you with the EPP auth codes.

Checking the lock status of your domain

You can confirm the status of your domain to see if it's unlocked at whois.R4L.com. You will see the status listed as "Ok" when the domain is unlocked.

Once unlocked, you can contact us again to have us resubmit the domain transfer, or wait for this to happen automatically.

If you don't see the domain getting unlocked, then please give us a call and we will get our compliance dept. involved to add pressure on the current registrar.

Confirming your domain transfer

Once your domain's been unlocked and we have resubmitted the transfer request, you need to watch your email for the admin address your domains are pointing to, and confirm the transfers as soon as you receive the request email.
