FAQ: How do registrar to registrar transfers work?

Registrar to Registrar Transfers

If you"re transfering an existing domain to Register4less.com, you should understand the process for registrar to registrar transfers.

The process works like this:

  1. Prepare the Domain for transfer:  To do this, with the current registrar you need to:
    • Unlock the domain. (If you look up the transfer and our site says the domain is not transferable, it's likely still locked.
    • Disable whois privacy service.
    • Make sure the admin email address is valid and goes to you. Caution, some registrars will try to force you into a 60 day no-transfer clause when making contact changes. Make your you don't agree to this clause when makeing contact changes.
    • Obtain the domain's authorization code.
  2. Order:You place the transfer order with us.
  3. Confirm: We will send an email to the adminitrative contact for your domain name a request to confirm the transfer.
    • If you confirm the transfer, the process continues. The email we send has full instructions for confirming the transfer req uest.
    • If you cannot confirm the transfer, the request will timeout, and we will resubmit* the domain for transfer.
  4. To Registry: Once confirmed, a request is sent to the registry to transfer the domain from your current registrar to us.
    • If your domain is locked, the registry will reject the transfer request, and we'll resubmit the transfer.
  5. Notification: The registry will send the domain's current registrar a notice of transfer away. They have one of three options:
    1. They accept the transfer and send the registry back an acknoledgement (ACK).
    2. They ignore the request.
    3. They decline the request and send the registry back a negative acknoledgement (NACK).
    • If they accept or ignore the request your domain transfer will complete. At this stage, the only way for a transfer to fail is if the current registrar denies the transfer request.
    • A number of registrars require that you confirm with them that you are transfering the domain away. If you are unsure of this, it is advisable to contact them and confirm that you do want to transfer the name.
  6. Registry Notification: The registry will send us back a notification of acceptance or decline for your transfer request.
  7. R4L Notification: We will notifiy you by email if the transfer has completed, or we will notify you that the transfer failed, and give you the reason we received for this. We will also resubmit the domain transfer.

*Our transfer monitoring system will limit the number of times a domain is resubmitted to 10 tries or 30 days. If the transfer has not completed within these limits, this is an indication that there is a holdup with the current registrar.
